Have you heard the blue jay’s bellowing caw?
Or happened to glance his blueberry cape?
Many a goose bump would surprise your nape.
He’s not a friendly bird that one should awe
Despite what others have said they foresaw.
He takes your lone hope and crumples, misshapes
Insensitive eyes that morbidly gape
As he pecks and prods on a feast of flaws
Plucking the fine meat from your hopes and dreams
And while he feasts on the flesh of your soul
He scolds you for not being fine and brave.
Then ridicules your pain, cries blaspheme
As if a simple bird could know the toll
That one places on their heart when they crave.

I wrote a sonnet, very specific requirements. It is italian styles which basically means the same rhythme for each line and the pattern is abbaabbacdecde. It has only fourteen lines and can be a challenge but I tried because I have been doing a lot of soul searching lately.

When the blue bird flies into your life you are suppose to have courage but sometimes it feels more like mockery, espeically when you don't know how to be brave.

I think I understand what this means, I'm kinda tired right now, so excuse me if I'm wrong. ;P

Is the goose supposed to be like people who tear down everything someone does, and constantly ridicules others?

It is a blue jay and if you are into animal totems (thats when you see specific animals frequently and depending on the animal they are trying to tell you something about your life). I have seen the blue jay recently and it means that I am supposed to have courage but I'm not feeling very brave and so instead of being a message of hope I feel like I am being mocked. That is the irony of the poem, how such a small, blue bird could be responsible for so much discontent. But writing in sonnet form is hard! You are limited to the syllables, number of sentences and specific pattern. This lends itself to true poetry as it is very mysterious and left up to the readers imagination. :)

Ah, I didn't know about animal totems. Well, you learn something new every day! :D

This poem has a lot of despair in it when I read it. Even though the bluebird (A bluejay) is colorful, he seems to be a dire harbinger. An evil and cruel thing. Or is the poen villifying the bird because of what the bird asks of her seems cruel.

Thats the point of despair. To be lost within ones self. The bird is prophesying (spelled wrong probably)courage, but the reader is lost in fear and can't find courage so the constant reminder is painful and creates the anger in the person. It isn't the bird, thats just a symbol of their insecurity.
